What are Margo and Quentin like?

The two main characters

TASKS
  1. Read the prologue up to p. 6 „Then I took a nap.“
  2. Describe (in writing), how Margo and Quentin behave in the playground.
  3. Read on until the end of the prologue.
  4. Discuss with a small group of students how Margo’s and Quentin’s behaviour in the episode with the dead guy relates to how both of them behave in the rest of the book. You can look for more examples of their behaviour, e.g. on p. 23 f for Quentin or on p. 32 f for both Margo and Quentin. Of course, it would be great if you could find examples of your own as well. Write down your points and examples from the text.

Narrative technique

TASKS
  1. Read p. 6 (“Okay, yeah! … closed the door almost-all-the-way.”
  2. Can you spot [finden] what kind of narrative technique the author uses somewhere in this passage? (If you don’t find it, click on the hint below).
  3. Now that you’ve found the technique, why does John Green do this? What actually happens to the narration?
  4. Who’s the narrator anyway and what’s the narrative perspective of the book?

In the two paragraphs: “Both my parents … I’d be crazier than a shithouse rat.” the narrator switches from narrating in the past to the present.
